JNTU B.Pharmacy I PHARMACEUTICAL ANALYSIS-I Previous Question Paper (June-2019 - R17)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
Part A
Give a brief note on Secondary standards with examples.
Answer
A secondary standard is a substance whose concentration is determined by comparison with a primary standard through a process known as standardization. These substances are typically not pure enough to be used directly for preparing standard solutions, and their concentration may change over time due to factors like instability or hygroscopic nature.
Examples include sodium hydroxide (NaOH), which absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and potassium permanganate (KMnO₄), which is not perfectly stable in solution.
What are the sources of errors?
Answer
Errors in pharmaceutical analysis arise from various sources, which are generally categorized into the following types:
- Determinate (Systematic) Errors: These are errors with a definite cause and a unidirectional bias, meaning they consistently result in values that are either higher or lower than the true value. They include instrumental errors (e.g., faulty calibration of balances or glassware), methodic errors (e.g., incomplete reactions or incorrect indicator selection), and personal errors (e.g., individual bias in reading burette volumes).
- Indeterminate (Random) Errors: These arise from unpredictable, uncontrollable fluctuations in experimental conditions such as slight changes in temperature, humidity, or vibrations. They follow a random distribution and cannot be eliminated, but their effect can be minimized by taking multiple replicate measurements and using statistical analysis.
- Gross Errors: These are caused by human mistakes, such as misreading an instrument, spilling a sample, or recording data incorrectly. These errors are usually large and necessitate the rejection of the affected data point and repetition of the analysis.
