b

Explain chain isomerism with suitable examples.

7 marks

Answer

Chain isomerism is a form of structural isomerism where compounds with the same molecular formula possess different arrangements of the carbon skeleton. This occurs because the carbon atoms can be linked in either a straight chain or a branched chain.

For example, consider the molecular formula C4H10 (Butane):

  1. n-Butane: CH3-CH2-CH2-CH3 (a continuous straight chain).
  2. Isobutane (2-methylpropane): CH3-CH(CH3)-CH3 (a branched chain).

Both isomers have the same molecular formula but differ in the connectivity of the carbon backbone, resulting in different physical properties such as boiling points.
