Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

What is Huckel’s rule? Explain with an example.

2 marks

Answer

Huckel's rule states that a planar, cyclic, fully conjugated system is aromatic if it contains (4n + 2) π electrons, where n is an integer (0, 1, 2, ...). For example, benzene has 6 π electrons (n=1), satisfying the rule and exhibiting aromatic stability.

b

What type of reactions does benzene undergo? Explain.

3 marks

Answer

Benzene primarily undergoes Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution (EAS) reactions. Because the π-electron cloud is stable and delocalized, benzene resists addition reactions that would destroy its aromaticity. Instead, electrophiles attack the ring to replace a hydrogen atom, maintaining the stable aromatic system.
