PART - A
Define microbiology.
Answer
Microbiology is the branch of science that deals with the study of microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and algae, including their structure, function, classification, and their impact on humans and the environment.
Explain microbial growth curve.
Answer
The microbial growth curve represents the population growth of microorganisms in a closed system over time, typically divided into four distinct phases:
- Lag phase: Period of adaptation where cells are metabolically active but not yet dividing.
- Log (Exponential) phase: Phase of maximum rate of cell division and exponential population increase.
- Stationary phase: Growth rate equals death rate due to nutrient depletion and accumulation of toxic waste.
- Death (Decline) phase: Population decreases as the death rate exceeds the growth rate.
