Elucidate upon the chemical and biological foundation of life.

15 marks

Answer

The foundation of life rests upon a precise integration of chemical principles and biological organization, where simple elements are transformed into complex, self-replicating systems.

Chemical Foundation: The chemical basis of life is defined by the unique properties of carbon, which acts as the structural backbone for organic molecules due to its ability to form stable, covalent bonds with itself and other elements like hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur. These elements organize into four primary classes of biological macromolecules:

  • Carbohydrates: Provide immediate energy and structural support (e.g., cellulose in plants).
  • Lipids: Essential for energy storage and the formation of semi-permeable biological membranes.
  • Proteins: Polymers of amino acids that function as catalysts (enzymes), structural components, and signaling molecules.
  • Nucleic Acids (DNA and RNA): The chemical repositories of genetic information, enabling the storage, replication, and expression of biological instructions.

Water is the fundamental solvent for these chemical reactions, providing a medium for molecular interactions, maintaining temperature stability, and facilitating transport through its polarity and hydrogen-bonding capabilities.

Biological Foundation: The biological organization follows a hierarchical structure, beginning at the cellular level, which is the fundamental unit of life. Key principles include:

  • Cell Theory: All living organisms are composed of cells, which arise from pre-existing cells through division.
  • Metabolism: The sum of chemical reactions that maintain homeostasis, involving energy transformation through pathways like glycolysis and the Krebs cycle.
  • Genetic Continuity: The central dogma of molecular biology (DNA to RNA to protein) ensures that biological information is accurately passed from one generation to the next.
  • Homeostasis: The ability of an organism to maintain a stable internal environment despite external fluctuations, regulated by feedback mechanisms.

Ultimately, life is defined by the emergence of complex properties from these chemical interactions, allowing organisms to grow, respond to stimuli, reproduce, and evolve through natural selection, ensuring the continuity of life across generations.

2

Describe the types of cellular reproduction and their significance.

15 marks

Answer

Cellular reproduction is the process by which a parent cell divides into two or more daughter cells. It is essential for growth, development, tissue repair, and the continuity of life. The two primary types of cellular reproduction are mitosis and meiosis.

1. Mitosis (Somatic Cell Division)

Mitosis is a process of nuclear division in eukaryotic cells that occurs when a parent cell divides to produce two identical daughter cells. It consists of four main stages: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase, followed by cytokinesis.

Significance of Mitosis:

  • Growth: Increases the number of cells in an organism, allowing for development from a zygote to a multicellular adult.
  • Cell Replacement and Repair: Facilitates the regeneration of damaged tissues and the replacement of dead or worn-out cells (e.g., skin cells, blood cells).
  • Asexual Reproduction: Serves as the primary mechanism for reproduction in many unicellular organisms and some multicellular organisms, ensuring genetic consistency.
  • Genetic Stability: Maintains the same chromosome number and genetic composition as the parent cell, preserving the organism's identity.

2. Meiosis (Germ Cell Division)

Meiosis is a specialized type of cell division that reduces the chromosome number by half, resulting in four genetically distinct haploid daughter cells. It involves two successive nuclear divisions: Meiosis I (reductional division) and Meiosis II (equational division).

Significance of Meiosis:

  • Sexual Reproduction: Produces gametes (sperm and egg cells) containing half the number of chromosomes, which fuse during fertilization to restore the diploid number in the zygote.
  • Genetic Variation: Promotes genetic diversity through processes like crossing over (recombination) during prophase I and independent assortment of chromosomes. This variation is crucial for evolution and adaptation.
  • Constancy of Chromosome Number: By halving the chromosome count, meiosis ensures that the species-specific chromosome number remains constant across generations despite sexual fusion.

In summary, while mitosis is vital for the maintenance and growth of the individual organism, meiosis is essential for the perpetuation of the species and the introduction of genetic diversity.
