Main
Write briefly on rheology modifiers, emollients and preservatives with two examples.
Answer
Rheology Modifiers are substances added to cosmetic formulations to control viscosity, flow characteristics, and stability. They ensure the product has the desired texture, ease of application, and suspension properties for ingredients. Examples include Carbomer and Xanthan Gum.
Emollients are cosmetic ingredients that soften, soothe, and smooth the skin by filling the spaces between skin cells and preventing transepidermal water loss. They improve the spreadability and sensory feel of creams and lotions. Examples include Isopropyl Myristate and Dimethicone.
Preservatives are antimicrobial agents incorporated into cosmetic products to prevent the growth of bacteria, fungi, and molds during storage and consumer use. They are essential for product safety and shelf-life extension. Examples include Phenoxyethanol and Methylparaben.
Draw a neat diagram of skin and explain skin functions.
Answer
The skin is the largest organ of the body, consisting of three primary layers: the epidermis (outermost layer), the dermis (middle layer containing connective tissue, glands, and follicles), and the hypodermis (subcutaneous fat layer). A diagram of the skin would depict the epidermis at the top, followed by the dermis containing hair follicles, sebaceous glands, sweat glands, and blood vessels, and the hypodermis at the base.
The primary functions of the skin include:
- Protection: Acts as a physical barrier against mechanical injury, chemical substances, ultraviolet radiation, and microbial invasion.
- Thermoregulation: Maintains body temperature through the regulation of blood flow to the skin surface and the evaporation of sweat produced by eccrine glands.
- Sensation: Contains various sensory receptors that detect touch, pressure, pain, heat, and cold, allowing the body to respond to environmental stimuli.
- Excretion: Eliminates small amounts of metabolic waste products, such as urea and salts, through sweat.
- Vitamin D Synthesis: Facilitates the production of Vitamin D3 when the skin is exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation from sunlight.
- Immunity: Houses specialized immune cells, such as Langerhans cells, which identify and process antigens to initiate immune responses.
- Absorption: Although limited, the skin can absorb certain lipid-soluble substances and topical medications, which is a critical factor in cosmetic and dermatological product formulation.
