1

Write a note on the significance of Green chemistry.

15 marks

Answer

Green chemistry, also known as sustainable chemistry, is the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances. Its significance lies in its ability to reconcile industrial progress with environmental protection through the application of its twelve fundamental principles.

The primary significance of green chemistry includes:

  • Waste Prevention: It prioritizes the prevention of waste generation at the source rather than treating or cleaning up waste after it has been created, which is more cost-effective and environmentally benign.
  • Atom Economy: It emphasizes maximizing the incorporation of all materials used in the process into the final product, thereby reducing the amount of unused by-products.
  • Safer Chemical Design: It focuses on developing chemical products that are effective at their intended function while being non-toxic or having reduced toxicity to humans and the ecosystem.
  • Energy Efficiency: It promotes conducting chemical reactions at ambient temperature and pressure whenever possible, significantly reducing the energy demand of industrial processes.
  • Use of Renewable Feedstocks: It encourages the shift from petroleum-based raw materials to renewable alternatives, such as agricultural products or waste biomass, fostering sustainability.
  • Safer Solvents and Auxiliaries: It seeks to eliminate or replace hazardous solvents, separation agents, and other auxiliary chemicals with safer, greener alternatives like water, supercritical carbon dioxide, or solvent-free conditions.
  • Catalysis: It promotes the use of catalytic reagents, which are superior to stoichiometric reagents because they are effective in small amounts and can be reused, leading to higher efficiency and lower waste.

Ultimately, the significance of green chemistry is that it provides a scientific framework to achieve sustainability in the chemical industry. By reducing the ecological footprint of manufacturing, it mitigates climate change, protects biodiversity, improves workplace safety, and ensures long-term economic viability by reducing the costs associated with waste management, regulatory compliance, and raw material consumption.

2

Discuss in detail about the ultrasonic and catalytic approaches used in green chemistry.

15 marks

Answer

Green chemistry emphasizes the reduction of waste and energy consumption through innovative synthetic methodologies. Two prominent approaches are ultrasonic-assisted synthesis (sonochemistry) and the application of green catalysis.

Ultrasonic-Assisted Synthesis (Sonochemistry)

Sonochemistry utilizes high-frequency sound waves (typically 20 kHz to 10 MHz) to induce chemical reactions. The primary mechanism is acoustic cavitation, where the rapid formation, growth, and implosive collapse of microscopic bubbles in a liquid medium generate localized extreme conditions.

  1. Localized Hotspots: During bubble collapse, temperatures can reach 5,000 K and pressures up to 1,000 atm, providing the activation energy required for difficult reactions without heating the entire bulk solvent.
  2. Enhanced Mass Transfer: The shock waves and micro-jets produced during cavitation disrupt phase boundaries, significantly increasing the surface area and mass transfer between immiscible reactants.
  3. Efficiency: This approach reduces reaction times from hours to minutes, improves yields, and often allows for the use of milder, environmentally benign solvents like water.

Catalytic Approaches

Catalysis is the cornerstone of green chemistry, as it enables reactions to proceed via lower-energy pathways, increasing atom economy and reducing byproduct formation.

  1. Heterogeneous Catalysis: Solid catalysts (e.g., zeolites, metal oxides, or supported nanoparticles) are preferred because they are easily separated from the reaction mixture by filtration, allowing for catalyst recovery and reuse, which minimizes waste.
  2. Phase Transfer Catalysis (PTC): PTC facilitates reactions between reagents located in immiscible phases (e.g., aqueous and organic). By using a catalyst to shuttle ions between phases, it eliminates the need for toxic co-solvents or harsh reaction conditions.
  3. Biocatalysis: Utilizing enzymes or whole cells as catalysts offers high chemo-, regio-, and stereoselectivity. Biocatalytic processes operate under ambient conditions (neutral pH, low temperature), significantly reducing energy demand and the use of hazardous chemicals.
  4. Organocatalysis: Small organic molecules serve as catalysts, avoiding the use of heavy or toxic transition metals. This is particularly valuable in the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates where metal contamination must be strictly controlled.

By integrating these methods, green chemistry shifts industrial processes toward greater sustainability, minimizing the environmental footprint of chemical manufacturing.
