H2-antagonists are a class of drugs that competitively inhibit the action of histamine at the H2-receptors located on the parietal cells of the stomach. By blocking these receptors, they effectively reduce basal and nocturnal gastric acid secretion, making them essential in the treatment of peptic ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
