1

Give a brief account of plant based industries and institutions involved in work on medicinal and aromatic plants in India.

15 marks

Answer

The Indian medicinal and aromatic plant (MAP) sector is supported by a robust network of research institutions, regulatory bodies, and commercial industries that facilitate the cultivation, standardization, and global trade of herbal products.

Key Research and Development Institutions:

  • CSIR-CIMAP (Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants), Lucknow: The primary national laboratory dedicated to the research, development, and technology transfer of MAPs, focusing on high-yielding varieties and agro-technology.
  • CSIR-NBRI (National Botanical Research Institute), Lucknow: Specializes in plant conservation, taxonomy, and the development of herbal formulations.
  • ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research): Conducts clinical trials and pharmacological validation of traditional herbal medicines.
  • NMPB (National Medicinal Plants Board): Established under the Ministry of AYUSH, it provides policy support, financial assistance for cultivation, and promotes the conservation of medicinal plants across India.

Plant-Based Industries:

  • Herbal Pharmaceutical Industry: Companies like Himalaya Wellness, Dabur, Patanjali, and Charak Pharma lead the market by integrating traditional Ayurveda with modern pharmaceutical manufacturing standards (GMP). They focus on standardized extracts, polyherbal formulations, and nutraceuticals.
  • Essential Oil and Fragrance Industry: Concentrated in regions like Kannauj and parts of South India, these industries extract volatile oils for the perfumery, cosmetic, and food flavoring sectors.
  • Phytochemical Industry: Firms specializing in the isolation of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) such as alkaloids, glycosides, and flavonoids from plant sources for use in drug development.

Regulatory and Support Framework:

The sector is regulated by the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) and the Pharmacopoeial Commission of Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy (PCIM&H), which sets quality standards for herbal drugs. Furthermore, the AYUSH Ministry plays a pivotal role in promoting the global acceptance of Indian traditional medicine systems through international collaborations and the establishment of quality control laboratories.

2

Write an essay on selection, identification, authentication and processing of herbal raw materials for herbal drug industry.

15 marks

Answer

The quality and efficacy of herbal drugs are fundamentally dependent on the raw materials used. The standardization process begins with the rigorous selection and authentication of plant materials to ensure consistency in the herbal drug industry.

Selection: Selection involves choosing the correct botanical species, variety, and chemotype. Factors considered include the geographical source, season of collection, and the developmental stage of the plant. Proper selection ensures that the secondary metabolites, which are responsible for therapeutic activity, are present in optimal concentrations.

Identification: Identification is the process of establishing the identity of the plant material. This is achieved through:

  • Morphological evaluation: Examining the shape, size, color, texture, and odor of the plant parts.
  • Microscopic evaluation: Using histological studies to identify diagnostic features like trichomes, stomata, calcium oxalate crystals, and vascular bundles.
  • Chemical evaluation: Utilizing qualitative and quantitative tests, such as TLC, HPTLC, and HPLC, to confirm the presence of marker compounds or active constituents.

Authentication: Authentication involves verifying the identity of the specimen by comparing it with a reference standard, such as a herbarium specimen, or by obtaining certification from a qualified botanist or pharmacognosist. This step is critical to prevent adulteration and substitution with inferior or toxic species.

Processing of Herbal Raw Materials: Post-harvest processing is essential to prevent degradation and maintain the stability of active constituents:

  1. Cleaning: Removal of foreign organic matter, soil, and debris through washing or mechanical cleaning.
  2. Drying: The most critical step to reduce moisture content (usually below 10-12%) to prevent microbial growth and enzymatic hydrolysis. Methods include sun drying, shade drying, or controlled mechanical drying (tray or vacuum drying).
  3. Size Reduction and Grading: Milling or grinding the material to a specific particle size to facilitate extraction, followed by sieving to ensure uniformity.
  4. Packaging and Storage: Storing in moisture-proof, light-resistant, and insect-proof containers to protect the material from environmental factors like humidity, light, and oxidation.

Adherence to Good Agricultural and Collection Practices (GACP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) throughout these stages is mandatory to ensure the production of safe, effective, and standardized herbal drugs.
