Main
Write the definition and scope of pharmaceutical analysis.
Answer
Pharmaceutical analysis is a branch of practical chemistry that involves a series of procedures for the identification, determination, quantitation, and purification of a substance, separation of the components of a solution or mixture, or determination of the structure of chemical compounds used in the pharmaceutical industry. It ensures the quality, safety, and efficacy of drugs and medicinal products.
The scope of pharmaceutical analysis includes:
- Quality control of raw materials, intermediates, and finished pharmaceutical products.
- Standardization of drugs according to pharmacopoeial specifications (IP, BP, USP).
- Stability testing to determine the shelf life and degradation products of formulations.
- Bioanalytical studies to determine drug concentration in biological fluids (pharmacokinetics).
- Validation of analytical methods to ensure reliability, accuracy, and precision.
- Detection of impurities, contaminants, and degradation products in drug substances.
- Support for research and development in drug discovery and formulation design.
List the methods of expressing concentration.
Answer
Concentration is the amount of solute present in a given quantity of solvent or solution. The common methods of expressing concentration in pharmaceutical analysis are:
- Molarity (M): Number of moles of solute per liter of solution.
- Molality (m): Number of moles of solute per kilogram of solvent.
- Normality (N): Number of gram equivalents of solute per liter of solution.
- Formality (F): Number of formula weights of solute per liter of solution.
- Mole Fraction (X): Ratio of the number of moles of one component to the total number of moles of all components in the mixture.
- Percentage Concentration: Expressed as weight/weight (w/w), weight/volume (w/v), or volume/volume (v/v).
- Parts per million (ppm) and Parts per billion (ppb): Used for expressing very dilute concentrations, representing the number of parts of solute per million or billion parts of solution.
