Answer PaperPaper Code: 247AAMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.

Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions.

In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1.a

Create the Jablonski Energy Diagram.

2 marks

Answer

The Jablonski diagram illustrates the electronic energy states of a molecule and the transitions between them. It represents the ground state (S0) and excited singlet states (S1, S2) and triplet states (T1, T2) as horizontal lines. Vertical arrows indicate transitions: upward arrows represent absorption, while downward arrows represent radiative processes such as fluorescence (S1 to S0) and phosphorescence (T1 to S0). Non-radiative processes like internal conversion and intersystem crossing are represented by horizontal or wavy lines between states.

1.b

Generate the equation of Beer-Lambert’s Law.

3 marks

Answer

Beer-Lambert’s Law describes the linear relationship between the absorbance of a solution and its concentration. It is derived by combining Beer’s Law, which states that absorbance is directly proportional to concentration, and Lambert’s Law, which states that absorbance is directly proportional to the path length of the sample.

The mathematical equation is:

A = εbc

Where:

  • A is the absorbance (dimensionless).
  • ε (epsilon) is the molar absorptivity or molar extinction coefficient (L mol⁻¹ cm⁻¹).
  • b is the path length of the sample cell or cuvette (usually in cm).
  • c is the concentration of the absorbing species (mol L⁻¹).
1.c
