1

Discuss the consumer buying behavior with reference to stimulus-response model. Add a note on consumer buying decision process.

15 marks

Answer

The stimulus-response model of buyer behavior serves as the foundation for understanding how marketing and environmental stimuli are processed by the consumer to produce a specific purchase decision. The model posits that marketing stimuli (the 4Ps: Product, Price, Place, Promotion) and environmental stimuli (economic, technological, political, and cultural factors) enter the consumer's black box. This black box consists of the buyer's characteristics (cultural, social, personal, and psychological factors) and the buyer's decision process, which ultimately results in buyer responses, such as product choice, brand choice, dealer choice, purchase timing, and purchase amount.

The consumer buying decision process consists of five sequential stages:

  1. Need Recognition: The process begins when a consumer perceives a difference between their actual state and a desired state, triggered by internal stimuli (e.g., hunger) or external stimuli (e.g., pharmaceutical advertisements).
  2. Information Search: The consumer seeks information to satisfy the need. This may involve personal sources (family, friends), commercial sources (medical representatives, advertisements), or public sources (health websites, journals).
  3. Evaluation of Alternatives: Consumers process information to arrive at brand beliefs and attitudes. They evaluate pharmaceutical products based on attributes like efficacy, safety, price, and brand reputation, often using a compensatory or non-compensatory model to rank choices.
  4. Purchase Decision: The consumer forms an intention to buy the most preferred brand. This stage can be influenced by the attitudes of others or unexpected situational factors, such as a pharmacist's recommendation or out-of-stock conditions.
  5. Post-purchase Behavior: After the purchase, the consumer compares the product's performance with their expectations. If the product meets expectations, the consumer is satisfied; if it falls short, they experience cognitive dissonance, which marketers must mitigate through effective communication and customer support.
2

Illustrate market segmentation process with reference to pharmaceutical sector. List factors affecting prescribing habits of physicians.

15 marks

Answer

Market segmentation in the pharmaceutical sector is the process of dividing a heterogeneous market of healthcare providers, patients, and payers into smaller, homogeneous groups with similar needs, characteristics, or behaviors to develop targeted marketing strategies. The process involves the following steps:

  1. Defining the Market: Identifying the therapeutic area (e.g., cardiology, oncology) and the scope of the target population.
  2. Selecting Segmentation Bases: Categorizing the market based on demographics (age, gender), geographics (region, urban/rural), psychographics (attitudes toward innovation, risk tolerance), and behavioral factors (prescribing frequency, patient volume).
  3. Developing Profiles: Creating detailed profiles for each segment, such as 'High-volume academic specialists' or 'General practitioners in rural settings'.
  4. Evaluating Segment Attractiveness: Assessing segments based on market size, growth potential, accessibility, and profitability.
  5. Selecting Target Segments: Choosing the most viable segments to focus promotional efforts and resources.
  6. Positioning and Marketing Mix: Tailoring the product value proposition, pricing, and communication channels to meet the specific requirements of the chosen segment.

Prescribing habits of physicians are influenced by a complex interplay of clinical, professional, and commercial factors:

  • Clinical Efficacy and Safety: The primary driver; physicians prioritize evidence-based medicine, clinical trial data, and the safety profile of the drug.
  • Patient-Specific Factors: Comorbidities, age, socioeconomic status, and insurance coverage of the patient.
  • Professional Experience: Personal experience with the drug, peer recommendations, and clinical guidelines issued by medical associations.
  • Pharmaceutical Promotion: The quality of information provided by medical representatives, availability of clinical samples, and promotional materials.
  • Economic Factors: Cost of the therapy, availability of generic alternatives, and institutional formulary restrictions.
  • External Influences: Regulatory environment, government policies, and the influence of Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) in the medical community.
