Main
Explain types of correlation and correlation coefficient. Give suitable examples.
Answer
Correlation measures the strength and direction of the linear relationship between two variables. It is categorized into three types: Positive correlation occurs when both variables move in the same direction (e.g., as study hours increase, exam scores increase). Negative correlation occurs when variables move in opposite directions (e.g., as the price of a drug increases, its demand decreases). Zero correlation indicates no linear relationship exists between the variables (e.g., a person's height and their test score).
The correlation coefficient, denoted as r, quantifies this relationship on a scale from -1 to +1. A value of +1 indicates a perfect positive linear relationship, -1 indicates a perfect negative linear relationship, and 0 indicates no linear relationship. For instance, in a clinical trial, a correlation coefficient of 0.85 between dosage and blood concentration suggests a strong positive relationship.
Define probability and explain its significance in statistical inference with examples.
Answer
Probability is the numerical measure of the likelihood that a specific event will occur, expressed as a value between 0 (impossible) and 1 (certain). It is defined as the ratio of the number of favorable outcomes to the total number of possible outcomes in a sample space.
In statistical inference, probability is fundamental for drawing conclusions about a population based on sample data. It allows researchers to quantify uncertainty and determine the reliability of their findings. Key applications include:
- Hypothesis Testing: Probability values (p-values) help determine if observed differences are statistically significant or due to random chance. For example, a p-value less than 0.05 suggests that the probability of the observed effect occurring by chance is low, supporting the rejection of the null hypothesis.
- Confidence Intervals: Probability distributions enable the construction of intervals that likely contain the true population parameter, providing a measure of precision for estimates.
- Risk Assessment: In pharmacy, probability is used to estimate the likelihood of adverse drug reactions within a population based on clinical trial results.
Discuss with examples measures of central tendency.
