An area of 200 cm2 on a map represents 50 km2 of actual land area. Draw a diagonal scale to measure a distance up to a single decametre. Mark off the following distances on the scale: (i) 5 km, 7 hectometres and 6 decametres, (ii) 3.04 km and (iii) 458 decametres.

12 marks

Answer

First, calculate the Representative Fraction (RF). The area scale is 200 cm2 = 50 km2. Thus, 1 cm2 = 0.25 km2, which means 1 cm = 0.5 km. Since 1 km = 100,000 cm, the RF is 1 / (0.5 × 100,000) = 1 / 50,000.

To construct the diagonal scale:

  1. Determine the maximum length to represent (e.g., 8 km). The length of the scale = RF × maximum length = (1 / 50,000) × 8 × 100,000 cm = 16 cm.
  2. Draw a line 16 cm long, divide it into 8 equal parts (each representing 1 km), and subdivide the first part into 10 divisions (each representing 1 hectometre).
  3. Use the diagonal method to further subdivide the hectometre divisions into 10 parts (each representing 1 decametre).
  4. (i) For 5 km, 7 hm, 6 dam: Place the divider on the 5 km mark and the 7.6 hm mark.
  5. (ii) For 3.04 km (3 km, 0 hm, 4 dam): Place the divider on the 3 km mark and the 0.4 hm mark.
  6. (iii) For 458 dam (4 km, 5 hm, 8 dam): Place the divider on the 4 km mark and the 5.8 hm mark.

A semicircle of 50 mm diameter has a straight line AB of 80 mm length tangent to it at the end point, A of its diameter AC. Draw the paths of the end points A and B of the straight line AB, when AB rolls on the semicircle without slipping. Name the Curve.

Answer

The path traced by the end points of a line rolling on a curve without slipping is an involute. Specifically, since the line AB rolls on a semicircle, the path of point B is an involute of a semicircle.

  1. Draw a semicircle of diameter 50 mm (radius 25 mm) and mark points 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 at equal angular intervals.
  2. Draw tangents at each point. The length of the tangent at point 1 is the arc length from A to 1, at point 2 is the arc length from A to 2, and so on.
  3. For point B, the length of the tangent at any point 'n' is the original length of AB (80 mm) plus the arc length from A to 'n'.
  4. Mark these lengths along the tangents and join the points with a smooth curve using a French curve.
  5. The resulting curve is an involute of a semicircle.

A straight line AB has its end A 15 mm above the HP and 10 mm in front of the VP. The other end B is 25 mm in front of the VP. The VT is 10 mm above the HP. Draw the projections of the line if the distance between end projectors is 25 mm and find its true length and true angles of inclination with the HP and the VP. Locate the HT.
