Answer PaperPaper Code: 132ACMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Define a discrete random variable.

2 marks

Answer

A random variable is called discrete if it takes on a finite or countably infinite number of distinct values. It is typically associated with counting processes.

b

If X is a continuous random variable with p.d.f f(x) = ax, 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 and f(x) = a, 1 ≤ x ≤ 2, elsewhere 0. Find ‘a’.

3 marks

Answer

For a probability density function, the total area under the curve must be 1:

∫[0 to 1] ax dx + ∫[1 to 2] a dx = 1

Evaluating the integrals:

[ax²/2][0 to 1] + [ax][1 to 2] = 1
a/2 + a(2 - 1) = 1
a/2 + a = 1 ⇒ 3a/2 = 1 ⇒ a = 2/3
c

Write the formulae to find the standard error of the i) sample mean ii) Difference between the means.
