a

What are the applications of surface tension?

2 marks

Answer

Surface tension is applied in the formation of soap bubbles and liquid droplets, the capillary action in plants for water transport, the cleaning action of detergents by reducing surface tension, and the operation of liquid-in-glass thermometers.

b

Explain atmospheric, gauge and vacuum pressure.

3 marks

Answer

Atmospheric pressure is the pressure exerted by the weight of the atmosphere at a given point. Gauge pressure is the pressure measured relative to the local atmospheric pressure, while vacuum pressure is the pressure measured below the local atmospheric pressure.
