State the necessary conditions for a function f(z) to be analytic. Show that the function

f(z) = |xy|
is not analytic at the origin, although the Cauchy-Riemann equations are satisfied.

8 marks

Answer

A function f(z) = u(x, y) + iv(x, y) is analytic at a point if it is single-valued and differentiable in a neighborhood of that point. The necessary conditions are that the partial derivatives ux, uy, vx, and vy exist, are continuous, and satisfy the Cauchy-Riemann equations: ux = vy and uy = -vx.

For f(z) = |xy|, we have u = |xy| and v = 0. At the origin (0,0):

ux = lim(h→0) [|h(0)| - |0(0)|] / h = 0
uy = lim(k→0) [|0(k)| - |0(0)|] / k = 0
vx = 0, vy = 0

The Cauchy-Riemann equations 0=0 and 0=-0 are satisfied at the origin. However, for f(z) to be analytic, the derivative must exist. The limit of the difference quotient is:

f'(0) = lim(z→0) [|xy| - 0] / (x + iy)

Along the path y = mx, the limit becomes:

lim(x→0) [|mx2|] / [x(1 + im)] = lim(x→0) [|m|x2] / [x(1 + im)] = lim(x→0) [|m|x] / (1 + im) = 0

While the limit exists and is 0, f(z) is not analytic because it fails to satisfy the Cauchy-Riemann equations in any neighborhood of the origin (e.g., for x, y > 0, ux = y, which is not 0 for y ≠ 0), meaning it is not differentiable in a neighborhood of the origin.

Determine the analytic function

w = u + iv
, if
v = log(x2 + y2) + x - 2y
.

7 marks

Answer

Given v = log(x2 + y2) + x - 2y, we find the partial derivatives:

vx = 2x / (x2 + y2) + 1
vy = 2y / (x2 + y2) - 2

Using the Cauchy-Riemann equations ux = vy and uy = -vx:

ux = 2y / (x2 + y2) - 2
uy = -2x / (x2 + y2) - 1

Using the Milne-Thomson method, f'(z) = ux + ivx. Substituting x = z and y = 0:

f'(z) = [2(0) / (z2 + 0) - 2] + i[2z / (z2 + 0) + 1] = -2 + i(2/z + 1)

Integrating with respect to z:

f(z) = ∫(-2 + 2i/z + i)dz = (-2 + i)z + 2i log(z) + C

Thus, the analytic function is f(z) = (-2 + i)z + 2i log(z) + C.
