A cylinder Piston arrangement is containing fluid at a pressure of 3 bar and with specific volume of 0.18 m3/kg allows the fluid to expand reversibility to a pressure of 0.6 bar according to the law P = C / v2 where C is constant. Determine the work done by the fluid on the piston.

Answer

Given data:

Initial pressure, P1 = 3 bar = 3 × 105 N/m2

Initial specific volume, v1 = 0.18 m3/kg

Final pressure, P2 = 0.6 bar = 0.6 × 105 N/m2

Expansion law: P = C / v2, which implies P v2 = C

First, determine the constant C:

C = P1 × v12 = 3 × 105 × (0.18)2 = 9720 N·m/kg

Next, determine the final specific volume v2:

v2 = √(C / P2) = √(9720 / 0.6 × 105) = √(0.162) = 0.4025 m3/kg

The work done per unit mass during a reversible process is given by the integral of P dv:

W = ∫v1v2 P dv = ∫v1v2 (C / v2) dv
W = C × [-1 / v]v1v2 = C × (1 / v1 - 1 / v2)

Substituting the values:

W = 9720 × (1 / 0.18 - 1 / 0.4025)
W = 9720 × (5.5556 - 2.4845) = 9720 × 3.0711 = 29851.1 J/kg

The work done by the fluid on the piston is 29.85 kJ/kg.

A steam turbine operates under steady flow conditions. It receives 7200 kg per hour of steam from the boiler. The steam enters the turbine at enthalpy of 2800 kJ per kg, a velocity of 4000 m per minute and elevation of 4 m. The steam leaves that turbine at enthalpy of 2000 kJ per kg, a velocity of 8000 m/ minute and elevation of 1 m. Due to radiation, heat loss from the turbine to the surroundings amount to 1580 kJ per hour, calculate the output of the turbine.

Answer

To calculate the power output of the turbine, we apply the Steady Flow Energy Equation (SFEE) for a control volume:

ṁ(h₁ + V₁²/2 + gZ₁) + Q̇ = ṁ(h₂ + V₂²/2 + gZ₂) + Ẇ

First, convert all given values to SI units (kg/s, kJ/kg, m/s, m):

  • Mass flow rate (ṁ) = 7200 kg/hr = 7200 / 3600 = 2 kg/s
  • Inlet velocity (V₁) = 4000 m/min = 4000 / 60 = 66.67 m/s
  • Outlet velocity (V₂) = 8000 m/min = 8000 / 60 = 133.33 m/s
  • Heat loss (Q̇) = -1580 kJ/hr = -1580 / 3600 = -0.439 kJ/s (kW)
  • Enthalpy change (h₁ - h₂) = 2800 - 2000 = 800 kJ/kg
  • Kinetic energy change (ΔKE) = (V₂² - V₁²) / (2 × 1000) = (133.33² - 66.67²) / 2000 = (17776.89 - 4444.89) / 2000 = 6.666 kJ/kg
  • Potential energy change (ΔPE) = g(Z₂ - Z₁) / 1000 = 9.81 × (1 - 4) / 1000 = -0.0294 kJ/kg

Rearranging the SFEE for work output (Ẇ):

Ẇ = ṁ[(h₁ - h₂) - (V₂² - V₁²)/2000 - g(Z₂ - Z₁)/1000] + Q̇

Substituting the values:

Ẇ = 2 × [800 - 6.666 - (-0.0294)] - 0.439
Ẇ = 2 × [793.3634] - 0.439
Ẇ = 1586.727 - 0.439 = 1586.288 kW

The power output of the turbine is 1586.29 kW.

The expansion of a perfect gas is so controlled that the pressure changes according to the P = AV + B where A and B are constant and V is the volume. The mass of gas is 1.4 kg and the initial and final pressures are 6 bar and 2 bar. The corresponding volumes are 0.2 and 0.6 m3. Assume γ = 1.39, R = 0.28 kJ/kgK. Find the change in entropy per kg during expansion, the maximum value of internal energy per kg reckoned from zero degrees centigrade and the net heat removed or added during the cycle.

Show that when a perfect gas changes from state P1 V1 T1 to another state P2 V2 T2 the increase in entropy per unit mass is given by (S2 - S1) = Cv ln(P2/P1) + Cp ln(V2/V1). Find the value of index n so that the gain of Entropy during the heating of gas at a constant volume between temperature T1 and T2 will be the same as that during an expansion according to the law PVn = constant between the same temperatures. Show also that the heat supplied for unit mass of gas will be the same in each case.
