JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech II FUNDAMENTALS OF STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS Previous Question Paper (May - 2019 - R16)
Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.
Part A
Define principal planes.
Answer
Principal planes are planes within a stressed body upon which the shear stress component is zero. The normal stresses acting on these planes are known as principal stresses.
Explain the significance of Airy’s stress function.
Answer
Airy’s stress function is a scalar function used to solve two-dimensional elasticity problems. By expressing stress components in terms of this function, the equilibrium equations are automatically satisfied, and the problem is reduced to solving a single biharmonic equation, which simplifies the analysis of complex stress distributions.
