JNTU
JNTU B.Tech II Year INTRODUCTION TO SPACE TECHNOLOGY Previous Question Paper (April - 2018 - R13)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
Part A
Draw the schematic layout of a pressure feed liquid rocket
Answer
A pressure-fed liquid rocket system consists of a high-pressure gas tank (usually helium), a pressure regulator, propellant tanks (fuel and oxidizer), and the rocket engine. The high-pressure gas is regulated and injected into the propellant tanks, forcing the fuel and oxidizer through valves into the combustion chamber where they ignite.
Explain the procedure to calculate impact point.
Answer
The impact point calculation involves determining the trajectory of the vehicle through the atmosphere. The procedure includes: 1) Defining the initial state vector (position and velocity) at the point of reentry. 2) Modeling the aerodynamic forces (drag, lift) and gravitational forces acting on the vehicle. 3) Integrating the equations of motion numerically over time until the altitude reaches zero. 4) Accounting for Earth's rotation and atmospheric density variations to pinpoint the final landing coordinates.
Write a short note on the three competing re-entry requirements.

Obtain expressions for:
a) Maximum ideal velocity for a given payload and
b) Maximum payload for a given ideal velocity, in case of a multi-stage rocket of N stages traveling in vacuum in a homogeneous gravitational field. Thus, deduce an expression for the minimum number of stages required in a multi-stage rocket assembly so that a given payload can be placed in the specified orbit.
