a

What is a complete diagonal tension field beam?

2 marks

Answer

A complete diagonal tension field beam is a thin-webbed beam where the web is so thin that it buckles under very low shear loads. In this state, the web is assumed to carry no compressive stress, and the entire shear load is carried by the tension stresses acting along the diagonal direction of the web panels, effectively acting like a Pratt truss.

b

Explain instability of stiffened panels.

3 marks

Answer

Instability in stiffened panels occurs when the thin skin between stiffeners buckles under compressive or shear loads before reaching the material's yield strength. This buckling can lead to local buckling of the skin, inter-rivet buckling, or general instability where both the skin and the stiffeners buckle together, significantly reducing the load-carrying capacity of the structure.

Calculate the shear flow distribution in the channel section shown in figure 2. Shown produced by a vertical shear load of 4.8 kN acting through its shear centre. Assume that the walls of the section are only effective in resisting shear stresses while the booms, each of area 300mm2, carry all direct stresses.

The thin-walled single cell beam shown in figure 3 has been idealized into a combination of direct stress-carrying booms and shear-stress-only-carrying walls. If the section supports a vertical shear load of 10 kN acting in a vertical plane through booms 3 and 6, calculate the distribution of shear flow around the section.

Calculate the deflection at the free end of the two-cell beam shown in figure 4 allowing for both bending and shear effects. The booms carry all the direct stresses while the skin panels, of constant thickness throughout are effective only in shear. Take E = 69,000 N/mm2 and G = 25,900 N/mm2.
