a

Explain the impact of air transportation system on human and natural environment.

7 marks

Answer

Air transportation significantly influences both human and natural environments through various externalities. The human environment is primarily affected by noise pollution, particularly in communities surrounding airports, which can lead to sleep disturbance, stress, and reduced property values. Additionally, air travel facilitates rapid global connectivity, fostering economic growth and cultural exchange, but also increases the risk of rapid disease transmission.

The natural environment is impacted through atmospheric emissions and land use. Aircraft engines emit carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and water vapor at high altitudes, contributing to the greenhouse effect and potential climate change. Furthermore, the construction and expansion of airports require significant land clearing, which can lead to habitat fragmentation, loss of biodiversity, and increased surface runoff affecting local water quality. Chemical runoff from de-icing fluids and fuel spills also poses risks to local soil and groundwater ecosystems.

b

With the help of a neat sketch, explain the attempts made by Sir George Cayley to design and test a full sized airplane.

8 marks

Answer

Sir George Cayley, often called the father of aviation, established the modern configuration of the airplane by separating the mechanisms for lift, propulsion, and control. His design philosophy centered on a fixed-wing aircraft rather than flapping wings.

Key aspects of his design and testing included:

  • Fixed Wing: He proposed a rigid wing set at a dihedral angle for lateral stability, providing lift while the fuselage remained stationary.
  • Empennage: He incorporated a tail unit consisting of both vertical and horizontal stabilizers to provide longitudinal and directional control.
  • Propulsion: Recognizing the limitations of human power, he explored internal combustion concepts and steam power, though he ultimately relied on gravity or human-powered gliders for his full-scale tests.
  • Testing: Cayley conducted systematic experiments with a whirling arm to measure lift and drag on airfoils. His most famous full-scale test involved his 'governess' or coachman, who piloted a man-carrying glider across a valley in 1853, successfully demonstrating sustained flight through aerodynamic lift.

The sketch of his design typically features a monoplane configuration with a large main wing, a cruciform tail (vertical and horizontal surfaces), and a boat-like nacelle for the pilot, representing the first true conceptual blueprint of a modern aircraft.
