An advanced fighter engine operating at a Mach number of 0.8 and 10kM altitude has the following uninstalled performance data and used a fuel with hPR = 42,800 kJ/kg. F = 50 kN ; ma = 45 kg/s ; mf = 2.65 kg/s. Determine the specific thrust, Thrust Specific Fuel Consumption and exit velocity.

8 marks

Answer

Given parameters: Mach number M = 0.8, Altitude = 10 km, Thrust F = 50,000 N, Air mass flow rate ma = 45 kg/s, Fuel mass flow rate mf = 2.65 kg/s, Fuel heating value hPR = 42,800 kJ/kg.

1. Specific Thrust (Fs):

Fs = F / ma = 50,000 / 45 = 1,111.11 Ns/kg

2. Thrust Specific Fuel Consumption (TSFC):

TSFC = mf / F = 2.65 / 50,000 = 0.000053 kg/Ns = 0.053 kg/(kN·s)

3. Exit Velocity (Ve):

Using the thrust equation F = ma(Ve - Va) + (ma + mf)(Ve - Va) is generally simplified as F = ma(Ve - Va) for basic calculations, or more accurately F = (ma + mf)Ve - maVa. At 10 km altitude, the speed of sound a is approximately 299.5 m/s. Thus, flight velocity Va = M × a = 0.8 × 299.5 = 239.6 m/s. Assuming negligible pressure thrust:

Ve = (F + maVa) / (ma + mf) = (50,000 + 45 × 239.6) / (45 + 2.65) = 60,782 / 47.65 = 1,275.6 m/s

What is an ‘After burner’? What are the advantages of an ‘after burning turbojet engine’?

7 marks

Answer

An afterburner (or reheat) is a component added to a turbojet or turbofan engine located between the turbine and the exhaust nozzle. It injects additional fuel directly into the high-velocity exhaust gases, where it burns, significantly increasing the gas temperature and pressure before expansion through the nozzle. This provides a substantial boost in thrust for short periods.

Advantages of an afterburning turbojet engine include:

  • Provides a significant increase in thrust (often 30% to 50% or more) for short-duration maneuvers, such as takeoff, climb, or combat acceleration.
  • Allows for supersonic flight capabilities in aircraft that might otherwise be limited by the thrust-to-weight ratio of a dry engine.
  • Offers a high thrust-to-weight ratio compared to increasing engine size or adding more engines, as the additional hardware is relatively lightweight.
  • Provides rapid response for emergency power requirements.

A ramjet has a constant diameter combustion chamber followed by a nozzle whose throat diameter is .094 times the chamber diameter. Air enters the combustion chamber with T0 = 1450 K and M = 0.3. What is the maximum rise in temperature rise in the combustion chamber without necessarily changing the chamber inlet conditions? For simplicity neglect the frictional losses in the chamber and nozzles. Assume that the working fluid has a specific heat ratio of 1.333.
