What are the different phases of aircraft design? Explain each of them in detail.

15 marks

Answer

The aircraft design process is a systematic, iterative procedure divided into three primary phases, each increasing in detail and fidelity as the project matures.

1. Conceptual Design Phase: This is the initial stage where the fundamental configuration of the aircraft is established. The primary objective is to determine the feasibility of the project and define the basic layout. Key activities include sizing the aircraft to meet mission requirements, selecting the propulsion system, estimating weights, and performing initial aerodynamic and stability analysis. The output is a baseline configuration that satisfies the performance specifications.

2. Preliminary Design Phase: In this phase, the conceptual design is refined and validated. The focus shifts to detailed aerodynamic analysis, structural layout, and systems integration. Wind tunnel testing or high-fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) are employed to verify performance predictions. Detailed weight and balance calculations are performed, and the internal arrangement of components is finalized. This phase concludes with a 'frozen' design configuration that serves as the basis for the final production engineering.

3. Detailed Design Phase: This is the final stage where every individual part and assembly is engineered for manufacturing. Detailed CAD models are created for every structural component, electrical system, and mechanical system. Material selection is finalized, and manufacturing processes, assembly sequences, and tooling requirements are defined. This phase results in the complete set of engineering drawings, specifications, and data required to build, test, and certify the aircraft for production and operation.

2

Discuss how the takeoff weight of an aircraft can be estimated. Explain the corresponding equation.

15 marks

Answer

The takeoff weight estimation is an iterative process based on the aircraft's mission requirements, payload, and performance constraints. Since the total takeoff weight (WTO) includes the weight of fuel, which itself depends on the total weight, the process requires solving for the weight fractions of individual mission segments.

The fundamental equation for takeoff weight estimation is derived from the mission profile:

WTO = Wcrew + Wpayload + Wfuel + Wempty

To solve this, the equation is expressed in terms of weight fractions:

WTO = (Wcrew + Wpayload) / (1 - (Wf/WTO) - (We/WTO))

The estimation steps are as follows:

  1. Define the mission profile (e.g., taxi, takeoff, climb, cruise, loiter, descent, landing).
  2. Determine the weight fraction for each segment (Mi = Wfinal/Winitial for segment i). The product of these fractions gives the total fuel fraction: (Wfuel/WTO) = 1 - (M1 * M2 * ... * Mn).
  3. Estimate the empty weight fraction (We/WTO) using historical statistical data for similar aircraft categories (e.g., transport, fighter, or general aviation).
  4. Calculate the initial takeoff weight using the mission requirements and the estimated fractions.
  5. Iterate the calculation by refining the empty weight fraction based on the newly calculated takeoff weight until the value converges within a specified tolerance.

This approach ensures that the design is balanced between the required performance capabilities and the structural weight limitations of the aircraft.
