Enumerate the aircraft subsystems. Give a brief description on vertical and horizontal tail.

15 marks

Answer

Aircraft subsystems are integrated systems that enable an aircraft to operate safely, efficiently, and perform its intended mission. The primary subsystems include:

  • Propulsion System: Provides the thrust required for flight, typically via jet engines or propellers.
  • Flight Control System: Allows the pilot to manipulate the aircraft's attitude and trajectory through surfaces like ailerons, elevators, and rudders.
  • Environmental Control System (ECS): Manages cabin pressure, temperature, and air quality for crew and passenger comfort.
  • Electrical Power System: Generates, regulates, and distributes electrical energy to avionics, lighting, and actuators.
  • Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems: Provide high-pressure power for operating landing gear, flaps, and brakes.
  • Avionics and Navigation Systems: Include communication, radar, flight management computers, and instrumentation.
  • Fuel System: Stores and delivers fuel to the engines.
  • Landing Gear System: Supports the aircraft on the ground and provides steering and braking capabilities.

The empennage, or tail section, is critical for stability and control:

Horizontal Tail: This assembly consists of a fixed horizontal stabilizer and movable elevators. Its primary function is to provide longitudinal (pitch) stability and control. By generating aerodynamic force (upward or downward), it balances the pitching moment produced by the main wing and allows the pilot to change the aircraft's pitch angle.

Vertical Tail: This assembly consists of a fixed vertical stabilizer and a movable rudder. Its primary function is to provide directional (yaw) stability and control. The vertical stabilizer acts like a weather vane to keep the aircraft aligned with the relative wind, while the rudder allows the pilot to control yawing motion, which is essential for coordinated turns and crosswind landings.

a

Discuss how the mission of an aircraft determines the type of the landing gear system.

7 marks

Answer

The mission profile of an aircraft dictates the structural, operational, and performance requirements of the landing gear. For short-takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft, the gear must be robust to handle rough, unpaved surfaces and allow for high-angle-of-attack landings, often requiring long-stroke shock absorbers. In contrast, high-speed transport aircraft prioritize aerodynamic efficiency, necessitating complex retraction mechanisms and fairings to minimize drag during cruise. Carrier-based naval aircraft require heavy-duty gear capable of withstanding high-sink-rate landings and the extreme forces of catapult launches and arresting wire engagements. Furthermore, mission-specific needs such as cargo loading height, ground clearance for external stores, and the ability to operate from soft fields determine the number of wheels, tire pressure, and the geometry of the landing gear struts.
