Answer PaperPaper Code: 126YWMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.

Part A

125 marks
a

Write the continuity equation in differential conservation form.

2 marks

Answer

The continuity equation in differential conservation form for a fluid flow is given by:

∂ρ/∂t + ∇·(ρV) = 0

where ρ is the density and V is the velocity vector.

b

What is the difference between shock capturing and shock fitting approach?

3 marks

Answer

In shock capturing, the shock wave is treated as part of the flow field and is captured automatically by the governing equations without explicit boundary conditions. In shock fitting, the shock is treated as a sharp discontinuity, and explicit jump conditions (Rankine-Hugoniot relations) are applied at the shock interface, which is tracked as a boundary.

c

Write any equation which exhibits elliptic nature.
