JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech IV REMOTE SENSING AND GIS Previous Question Paper (January/February - 2023 - R18)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
Elaborate the concept of Spectral Signature.
Answer
A Spectral Signature is the specific variation in electromagnetic radiation reflectance or emittance of an object as a function of wavelength. It serves as a unique "fingerprint" that allows for the identification and differentiation of various surface features, such as vegetation, soil, or water, based on how they interact with incident solar energy across different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Explain various resolutions involved in RS.
Answer
In remote sensing, resolution refers to the ability of an imaging system to distinguish small details in an image. There are four primary types of resolution:
- Spatial Resolution: Refers to the size of the smallest object that can be detected on the ground, typically represented by the pixel size (e.g., 30m x 30m).
- Spectral Resolution: Describes the ability of a sensor to define fine wavelength intervals. Higher spectral resolution allows for the identification of specific materials based on their unique spectral signatures.
- Radiometric Resolution: Represents the sensitivity of a sensor to small differences in electromagnetic energy, determined by the number of bits (e.g., 8-bit or 16-bit) used to record the intensity of reflected or emitted radiation.
- Temporal Resolution: Refers to the frequency with which a sensor captures imagery of the same geographic location, often described as the revisit time or repeat cycle of the satellite.
