Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

Define Cauchy’s linear differential equation.

2 marks

Answer

A Cauchy’s linear differential equation (also known as a Cauchy-Euler equation) is a linear differential equation of the form:

anxn(dny/dxn) + an-1xn-1(dn-1y/dxn-1) + ... + a1x(dy/dx) + a0y = Q(x)

where an, an-1, ..., a0 are constants and Q(x) is a function of x. The defining characteristic is that the power of the independent variable x in each term matches the order of the derivative in that same term.

1b

What are the ordinary point and regular singular points of a differential equation?

3 marks

Answer

For a second-order linear differential equation of the form

y'' + P(x)y' + Q(x)y = 0
, a point x = x₀ is classified based on the behavior of the coefficient functions P(x) and Q(x):

  • Ordinary Point: The point x₀ is an ordinary point if both P(x) and Q(x) are analytic at x₀, meaning they possess a Taylor series expansion about that point.
  • Regular Singular Point: The point x₀ is a singular point if it is not an ordinary point. It is classified as a regular singular point if the functions (x - x₀)P(x) and (x - x₀)²Q(x) are both analytic at x₀.
