JNTU B.Tech II PROPERTIES AND STRENGTH OF MATERIALS Previous Question Paper (April/May - 2018 - R13)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
Part A
Explain various properties of tiles.
Answer
Tiles must possess high compressive strength to withstand loads, low water absorption to prevent dampness, and durability against weathering and chemical attack. They should also exhibit dimensional stability, uniform color, and resistance to abrasion.
Describe various properties of cement and various uses of cement mortar.
Answer
Cement properties include fineness (affects hydration rate), setting time (initial and final), soundness (volume stability), and compressive strength. Cement mortar is used for brickwork, stone masonry, plastering, pointing, and as a bedding material for flooring.

A tubular strut pin jointed at both ends has outer and inner diameters as 40 mm and 36 mm respectively and 2.4 m long. Compare the crippling loads given by Euler’s and Rankine’s formulae. E = 204 MPa, yield stress = 310 MPa, Rankine’s constant is 1/7500. If the elastic limit stress is taken as 220 MPa, find the length below which the Euler’s formula ceases to apply.

Analyse the stability of a given gravity dam shown in figure for the following condition friction coefficient between concrete-foundation is 0.70, allowable shear stress at the foundation level is 2200 KN/m2, allowable compressive and shear stress in concrete are 2700 KN/m2, and 2400 kN/m2, respectively. Allowable compressive stress in foundation material is 2700 kN/m2, take specific weight of concrete and water as 24 kN/m3 and 10 kN/m3 respectively.
