Answer PaperPaper Code: 114CGMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.

Part A

125 marks
a

Define two important forms of precipitation.

2 marks

Answer

Two important forms of precipitation are Rain, which is liquid water droplets with diameters greater than 0.5 mm, and Snow, which consists of ice crystals formed by the sublimation of water vapor at temperatures below freezing.

b

What is meant by Probable Maximum Precipitation? List the methods of estimating PMP.

3 marks

Answer

Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP) is the theoretically greatest depth of precipitation for a given duration that is physically possible over a given size storm area at a particular geographical location at a certain time of the year. Methods for estimating PMP include: 1) Meteorological method (storm transposition and moisture maximization), 2) Statistical method (Hershfield's technique), and 3) Generalized charts.

c

The stage in the river is recorded as 40.5 m at 8:00 A.M. and it is observed to fall by 0.15 m in the next one hour. The stage-discharge relationship for the steady state flow conditions at the gauging site is established as

Q = 56.85 (y-37.5)1.85
, where Q is in m3/s and y is in m. If the velocity of the flood wave is taken as 2.25 m/s and the bed slope of the stream at the gauging site is 1.43 × 10-4, determine the discharge in the stream at 8:00 A.M.
