a

What are the benefits of size reduction?

2 marks

Answer

Size reduction increases the surface area-to-volume ratio, which enhances the rate of heat and mass transfer during processing. It also improves the uniformity of mixtures, facilitates the extraction of active ingredients, and improves the handling and packaging characteristics of agricultural products.

b

How do you estimate the fineness of ground materials?

3 marks

Answer

The fineness of ground materials is estimated using sieve analysis. A representative sample is passed through a series of standard sieves arranged in descending order of aperture size. The weight of material retained on each sieve is measured, and the fineness is expressed using the Fineness Modulus (FM), calculated as the sum of weight fractions retained on each sieve divided by 100.

c

Peas of average particle diameter of 8 mm have been grounded to 0.0015 mm size employing a 6 KW motor. If the grinding of the material has to be further fine, half that of above size, will the same motor capacity be sufficient, and else how much additional power is required. Consider Rittinger’s equation.

A cyclone separator having a cyclone diameter of 254 cm and air inlet diameter of 30 cm is used to collect particle of specific gravity 1.36. If the separating height is 3 times of inlet diameter and helix pitch is 18°, compute the smallest particle in mm, which can be collected by the cyclone separator. Also given the inlet width as 10 cm and entry particle velocity as 16 m/s. Estimate the pressure drop through the unit assuming vane constant as 0.56.

A bucket elevator was used to lift and fill an empty silo of 30 tonnes capacity with paddy. The volume of each bucket was 3980 cc. The belt is being operated over a 60 cm head pulley with a linear speed such that the grain gets discharged centrifugally. The grain weighs 540 kg/m3 and has to be lifted to 10 m height. By mistake the bottom discharge chute having 10 cm dia was kept open. If the equivalent dia of the grain which is being filled is 1.2 cm, find out the actual period of filling the silo. The angle of repose of paddy is 46°.
