JNTU B.Tech III DESIGN OF SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION STRUCTURES Previous Question Paper (December - 2018 - R15)
Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
Part A
Define open channel flow with examples.
Answer
Open channel flow is the flow of a liquid in a conduit with a free surface exposed to atmospheric pressure. Examples include flow in rivers, streams, irrigation canals, and partially filled pipes.
Define hydraulic jump and list out the application of hydraulic jump.
Answer
A hydraulic jump is the sudden rise in the water level that occurs when flow changes from supercritical to subcritical state. Its applications include dissipating excess energy of flowing water to prevent erosion, mixing chemicals in water treatment, and increasing the depth of flow for irrigation diversion.
What is the flow in a channel if a contracted rectangular weir with a 1.5 m crest length is placed in the channel and has a head of 0.5m?

Design a suitable down-stream profile of low ogee weir for a chute spillway with the following data. Spillway crest level = 198m, Level of bottom of flank at which the low ogee weir is constructed = 190m, Design discharge = 4000 cumecs, Effective length of spillway is 50m and assume Cd = 2.20. Assume any other data required.

Determine the required capacity of a farm pond to irrigate 12 ha farm in clay soil with 0.3 % slope. The annual rainfall in the area is 120cm out of which 80% takes place during monsoon season. The remaining 20% occur during rabi season. One Kharif and one rabi crop have to take every year. Out of which paddy and wheat will occupy 12 ha respectively during kharif and rabi seasons respectively. Assume daily evaporation 1.5 mm and other required data, suitable.
