JNTU B.Tech III THEORY OF STRUCTURES Previous Question Paper (May - 2019 - R15)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
Part A
What do you understand by the term ‘Lame’s theory’?
Answer
Lame’s theory provides the mathematical expressions for determining the radial and hoop (circumferential) stresses in thick cylindrical shells subjected to internal and external fluid pressures, assuming the material is homogeneous, isotropic, and obeys Hooke's law.
State the assumptions made in the analysis of thin and thick cylindrical shells
Answer
The primary assumptions are: 1) The material is homogeneous and isotropic. 2) The cylinder is long and subjected to uniform internal or external pressure. 3) Plane sections perpendicular to the longitudinal axis remain plane after deformation. 4) For thin shells, the stress distribution across the thickness is assumed uniform, whereas for thick shells, radial stress varies across the thickness.

A rectangular beam with b=350 mm and d=550 mm has a factored shear of 400 kN at the critical section near the supports. The steel at the tension side of the section consists of 4 - 32 mm bars which are continued at the support. Assuming fck=25 MPa and fy=415 MPa, design the vertical stirrups for the section.

Design a simply supported slab to cover a room of dimensions of 4 m × 5 m and 230 mm thick brick walls all around. Assume a live load of 3 kN/m2 and a finish load of 1 kN/m2. Use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel. Assume that the slab corners are free to lift up. Assume mild exposure conditions.
