Amorphous silica is primarily used as a reinforcing filler in rubber products, such as tires, to improve abrasion resistance and grip. It is also utilized as an anti-caking agent in food and pharmaceutical powders, a thickening agent in paints and coatings, and as a catalyst support in chemical processing.
Explain the production of xylose from corn cobs.
Answer
Xylose is produced from corn cobs through acid hydrolysis. The cobs are crushed and treated with dilute sulfuric acid at elevated temperatures and pressures to break down the hemicellulose fraction into xylose sugars. The resulting hydrolysate is then neutralized, filtered to remove impurities, and concentrated or crystallized to recover pure xylose.
