Answer PaperPaper Code: 128BDMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.

Part A

125 marks
a

Write the classifications of machine design.

2 marks

Answer

Machine design is classified into the following types: 1. Adaptive design, where minor modifications are made to existing designs. 2. Development design, which involves significant scientific training and design ability to create a new product. 3. New design, which requires high technical ability and creative thinking to develop a completely original machine.

b

Calculate the force required to punch a circular blank of 60 mm diameter in a plate of 5 mm thick. The ultimate shear stress of the plate is 350 N/mm2.

3 marks

Answer

The force required for punching is calculated using the formula: F = π × d × t × τ, where d = 60 mm, t = 5 mm, and τ = 350 N/mm2. Substituting the values: F = 3.1416 × 60 × 5 × 350 = 329,868 N or approximately 329.87 kN.
