The distance between Parry’s corner and Egmore is 2.5 km. On inspection of the road map, its equivalent distance measures 5 cm. Draw a diagonal scale to read 50m minimum. Show on it a distance of 6350 m.

8 marks

Answer

First, calculate the Representative Fraction (RF). The actual distance is 2.5 km = 250,000 cm. The map distance is 5 cm. Thus, RF = 5 / 250,000 = 1 / 50,000. The maximum length to be measured is 6350 m, so a length of 7 km (7000 m) is sufficient. The length of the scale = RF × maximum length = (1 / 50,000) × 7,000,000 cm = 14 cm.

To construct the diagonal scale: Draw a rectangle 14 cm long and 5 cm high. Divide the 14 cm length into 7 equal parts, each representing 1 km. Divide the first division (0 to 1 km) into 10 equal parts along the top and bottom, each representing 0.1 km (100 m). Draw diagonal lines to divide the height into 10 equal parts, each representing 10 m. To mark 6350 m, locate 6 km on the main scale, 300 m on the primary subdivisions, and move up 5 units (50 m) along the diagonal to reach the 6350 m point.

Construct a hyperbola, when the distance of the focus from the directrix is 65mm, an eccentricity is 3/2.

7 marks

Answer

Draw a vertical line as the directrix and a horizontal line as the axis. Mark the focus F on the axis at 65 mm from the directrix. Divide the line segment between the directrix and focus into 5 parts (since eccentricity e = 3/2 = 3+2=5). Mark the vertex V at the 3rd division from the directrix. The distance VF is 2/5 of 65 mm = 26 mm.

Mark points 1, 2, 3, etc., on the axis beyond the vertex. Erect perpendiculars at these points. With the focus F as the center and radius equal to the distance from the point on the axis to the directrix multiplied by 1.5, draw arcs to intersect the perpendiculars. Repeat this for multiple points to obtain the hyperbola curve passing through the vertex.

A right circular cone of base 60 mm diameter and 60 mm height stands vertically with its base on HP. A semicircular hole of 36 mm diameter is cut through the cone such that the axis of the hole is parallel to HP, perpendicular to VP and intersecting the axis of the cone 20 mm above the base. The flat surface of the hole is parallel to HP and perpendicular to VP. Draw the development of the lateral surface of the cone with the hole.

A square prism of base side 60 mm rests on one of its ends on the HP with the base sides equally inclined to the VP. It is penetrated fully by another square prism of base side 45 mm with the base side equally inclined to the HP. The axes intersect at right angles. The axis of the penetrating prism is parallel to both the HP and the VP. Draw the projections of the prisms and show the lines of intersection.
