JNTU B.Tech II METALLURGY AND MATERIALS SCIENCE Previous Question Paper (November/December - 2018 - R15)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.
PART - A
Answer
Grain boundaries appear darker under the microscope because they are regions of higher energy and disorder compared to the ordered crystalline structure within the grains. During etching, these boundaries are preferentially attacked and removed, creating small grooves or pits. When viewed under reflected light, these grooves scatter light away from the objective lens, making them appear dark. In contrast, the grains, being more resistant to etching, reflect light directly towards the objective lens, appearing brighter.
Answer
The plane (100) is a crystallographic plane that is perpendicular to the x-axis in a cubic crystal system. It passes through the origin and intersects the x-axis at one unit length, while being parallel to the y and z axes. Visually, in a cubic unit cell, this plane would cut through the front face, the top face, and the right face, forming a square parallel to the yz plane.
