B.Tech | II | II | R15 | April - 2018

Answer PaperPaper Code: 124DMMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

State the application of casting process.

2 marks

Answer

The casting process has numerous applications across various industries, including:

  • Automotive industry: Engine blocks, cylinder heads, manifolds, wheels.
  • Aerospace industry: Turbine blades, structural components.
  • Heavy machinery: Machine tool bases, pump housings, gears.
  • Construction: Manhole covers, grates, decorative elements.
  • Consumer goods: Cookware, plumbing fixtures, decorative items.
b

Draw the complete casting process with neat sketch.

3 marks

Answer

The casting process involves pouring molten metal into a mold cavity and allowing it to solidify. The complete process includes the following steps:

  1. Pattern Making: Creating a replica of the desired object, usually slightly larger to account for shrinkage.
  2. Mold Making: Creating a cavity in a mold material (like sand, metal, or ceramic) that matches the pattern's shape.
  3. Core Making (if needed): Creating internal cavities or passages within the casting.
  4. Melting: Heating the metal to its molten state.
  5. Pouring: Introducing the molten metal into the mold cavity.
  6. Solidification: Allowing the molten metal to cool and solidify within the mold.
  7. Shakeout: Removing the solidified casting from the mold.
  8. Finishing: Cleaning, machining, and surface treatment of the casting.

A neat sketch would depict a flask containing the mold cavity, molten metal being poured from a ladle, and the resulting solidified casting.
