Answer PaperPaper Code: 115CGMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

What is compressibility and bulk modulus?

2 marks

Answer

Compressibility is the measure of a fluid's change in volume under pressure. The Bulk Modulus (K) is the ratio of compressive stress to volumetric strain, defined as K = -dp / (dV/V), representing the fluid's resistance to compression.

b

List out different fluid properties along with their significance.

3 marks

Answer

Key fluid properties include:

  • Density: Mass per unit volume, critical for calculating weight and buoyancy.
  • Viscosity: Resistance to flow, determining energy loss due to friction.
  • Surface Tension: Tensile force at the interface, significant in capillary action and droplet formation.
c

What do you mean by laminar and turbulent flows?

A long steel rod of 2 cm diameter inclined at 60 deg with the horizontal is smeared with glycerin of viscosity 8.5 poises. A smooth brass sleeve of internal diameter 2.05 cm and length 30 cm slides concentrically down along the rod. If the weight of the sleeve is 12.5 N, determine the uniform speed of motion. Assume that the annular space between the rod and sleeve is completely filled with the lubricant.
