Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.

Part A

1a

Draw the P-V diagram and T-s diagram of Reheat cycle.

2 marks

Answer

The Reheat cycle involves expanding steam in a high-pressure turbine, returning it to the boiler to be reheated at constant pressure, and then expanding it further in a low-pressure turbine. On the P-V diagram, the process follows a cycle where the expansion line is interrupted by a constant pressure heating process between the two turbine stages. On the T-s diagram, the cycle shows the initial expansion, a constant pressure heating line that shifts the state to a higher temperature at the same pressure, followed by the final expansion to the condenser pressure.

P-V Diagram: Y-axis (Pressure), X-axis (Volume). The cycle consists of: 1-2 (Compression), 2-3 (Constant pressure heat addition), 3-4 (Expansion in HP turbine), 4-5 (Constant pressure reheat), 5-6 (Expansion in LP turbine), 6-1 (Condensation).
T-s Diagram: Y-axis (Temperature), X-axis (Entropy). The cycle consists of: 1-2 (Isentropic compression), 2-3 (Constant pressure heat addition), 3-4 (Isentropic expansion), 4-5 (Constant pressure reheat), 5-6 (Isentropic expansion), 6-1 (Constant pressure heat rejection).
1b

Write the significance of adiabatic flame temperature.

3 marks

Answer

The adiabatic flame temperature represents the maximum theoretical temperature that can be attained by the products of combustion when a fuel is burned in a perfectly insulated environment (adiabatic process) with no heat loss to the surroundings and no work done by the system. Its significance includes:

  • It provides an upper limit for the temperature achievable in combustion chambers, which is critical for evaluating the thermal efficiency of engines and gas turbines.
  • It serves as a vital parameter for material selection in engineering design, as components must be capable of withstanding these peak temperatures without structural failure or melting.
  • It is essential for predicting the formation of thermal pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), which increase exponentially with higher combustion temperatures.
