Part A

125 marks
a

Define Battery Capacity. On what factors does it depend? How does the capacity change with temperature?

2 marks

Answer

Battery Capacity is the total amount of electrical energy a battery can deliver, typically measured in Ampere-hours (Ah). It depends on the number and size of plates, the quantity and specific gravity of the electrolyte, and the age of the battery. Capacity decreases as temperature drops because the chemical reaction rate slows down and internal resistance increases.

b

Distinguish between slow rate charging and Quick rate charging.

3 marks

Answer

Slow rate charging uses a low current over a long period (typically 10-20 hours) to fully restore charge without damaging the plates. Quick rate charging uses a high current for a short duration (1-2 hours) to provide a rapid boost, but it generates significant heat and can cause plate buckling or active material shedding if used excessively.
