Answer PaperPaper Code: 125DWMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.

Part A

1a

Define discrete time system.

2 marks

Answer

A discrete-time system is a mathematical model or physical device that transforms an input sequence x[n] into an output sequence y[n]. It operates by processing discrete-time signals, where the independent variable n is restricted to integer values, and it is typically represented by the mapping y[n] = T{x[n]}, where T denotes the transformation or rule of the system.

1b

Define causal and anticausal system.

3 marks

Answer

A system is causal if its output at any time instant depends only on the present and past values of the input signal. For a discrete-time system, the output y[n] must not depend on any input x[k] where k > n. Mathematically, a system is causal if its impulse response h[n] = 0 for all n < 0.

A system is anticausal if its output at any time instant depends only on the present and future values of the input signal. In this case, the output y[n] does not depend on any past input values x[k] where k < n. For a discrete-time system, this implies that the impulse response h[n] = 0 for all n > 0.
