Main
Discuss different types of radio communication systems.
Answer
Radio communication systems are categorized based on their frequency range, modulation techniques, and application. The primary types include:
- Ground Wave Propagation: Utilized for low and medium frequencies (up to 2 MHz). The radio waves travel along the surface of the Earth, following its curvature, making them suitable for long-distance communication at lower frequencies, such as AM radio broadcasting.
- Sky Wave Propagation: Operates in the HF (High Frequency) range (3 MHz to 30 MHz). These waves are reflected back to the Earth by the ionosphere, allowing for long-distance communication beyond the horizon, commonly used in shortwave radio.
- Space Wave Propagation: Used for VHF, UHF, and microwave frequencies (above 30 MHz). These waves travel in a direct line-of-sight between the transmitter and receiver antennas. This is the foundation for FM radio, television broadcasting, and satellite communications.
- Satellite Communication: A specialized form of space communication where a satellite acts as a relay station in space to receive, amplify, and retransmit signals between ground stations, enabling global coverage.
- Mobile/Cellular Systems: These systems divide a geographic area into cells, each served by a base station. They utilize frequency reuse and handoff mechanisms to provide wireless voice and data services to mobile users.
Discuss about digital signals.
Answer
Digital signals are discrete-time signals represented by a sequence of values, typically binary digits (bits) consisting of 0s and 1s. Unlike analog signals that vary continuously, digital signals represent information through specific voltage levels or pulse states.
Key characteristics of digital signals include:
- Quantization: The process of mapping continuous analog values to a finite set of discrete levels.
- Noise Immunity: Digital signals are highly resistant to noise and interference because the receiver only needs to distinguish between two states (high or low) rather than interpreting precise amplitude levels.
- Regeneration: Digital signals can be perfectly reconstructed using repeaters, which detect the pulse and generate a fresh, noise-free signal, allowing for long-distance transmission without cumulative degradation.
- Efficiency: They allow for advanced data compression and error detection/correction techniques, making them ideal for modern computer networks, digital telephony, and multimedia streaming.
Compare analog and pulse type of signals. Justify which are advantageous.
