JNTU B.Tech II OPERATING SYSTEMS Previous Question Paper (September/October - 2023 - R16)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
What is a system software? How is it different from an application software?
Answer
System software is a type of computer program designed to run a computer's hardware and application programs, acting as an interface between hardware and user applications. Application software is designed to perform specific tasks for the user, such as word processing or web browsing. While system software is essential for the computer to function (e.g., OS, device drivers), application software is optional and depends on user requirements.
Draw the layered architecture of an operating system and explain various components of it.
Answer
The layered architecture organizes the OS into a hierarchy of layers, where each layer uses the functions and services of the layer below it. The bottom layer (Layer 0) is the hardware, and the highest layer (Layer N) is the user interface.
- Layer 0: Hardware
- Layer 1: CPU Scheduling
- Layer 2: Memory Management
- Layer 3: Process Management
- Layer 4: I/O Management
- Layer 5: User Programs
