Answer PaperPaper Code: 135AFMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Define θ-notation and Omega notation.

2 marks

Answer

θ-notation (Theta) provides a tight bound on the growth rate of a function, such that f(n) = θ(g(n)) if there exist positive constants c1, c2, and n0 such that c1g(n) ≤ f(n) ≤ c2g(n) for all n ≥ n0. Ω-notation (Omega) provides an asymptotic lower bound, such that f(n) = Ω(g(n)) if there exist positive constants c and n0 such that f(n) ≥ cg(n) for all n ≥ n0.

b

How do you measure the algorithm running time?

3 marks

Answer

Algorithm running time is measured by counting the number of primitive operations (like additions, comparisons, or assignments) executed as a function of the input size n. This is typically expressed using asymptotic notation (Big-O, Ω, or θ) to represent the worst-case, average-case, or best-case performance, often by analyzing the frequency of execution of the most dominant code segment.
