A circle of 50 mm diameter rolls inside another fixed circle of radius 80 mm. Draw the hypocycloid for the point P on the rolling circle, which is at the contact point of the fixed and rolling circles.

12 marks

Answer

To draw the hypocycloid where a circle of diameter 50 mm (radius r = 25 mm) rolls inside a fixed circle of radius R = 80 mm:

  1. Draw an arc of the fixed circle with radius R = 80 mm.
  2. Calculate the angle subtended by the rolling circle at the center of the fixed circle using the formula θ = (r/R) * 360°. Here, θ = (25/80) * 360° = 112.5°.
  3. Divide the rolling circle into 12 equal parts and label them 1, 2, ..., 12.
  4. Divide the arc of 112.5° into the same 12 equal parts.
  5. Draw the locus of the center of the rolling circle, which is an arc of radius (R - r) = 55 mm.
  6. With the center of the rolling circle at each division point on the locus arc, draw circles of radius 25 mm.
  7. Project the divisions of the rolling circle onto these circles. The intersection points define the path of the hypocycloid.
  8. Join these points with a smooth curve starting from the initial contact point P.

Construct a diagonal scale of RF = 1/4000 to show meters and long enough to measure 500 meters. Indicate on this a length of 374 meters.

13 marks

Answer

To construct the diagonal scale:

  1. Calculate the Length of Scale (LOS): LOS = RF * Maximum Length = (1/4000) * 500 m = 0.125 m = 12.5 cm.
  2. Draw a rectangle of 12.5 cm length and a suitable height (e.g., 5 cm). Divide the length into 5 equal parts, each representing 100 m.
  3. Divide the first part into 10 subdivisions, each representing 10 m.
  4. For the diagonal division, divide the height into 10 equal parts and draw horizontal lines.
  5. Divide the first subdivision (10 m) into 10 equal parts vertically and draw diagonal lines to represent units of 1 m.
  6. To mark 374 m: Measure 300 m on the main scale, 70 m on the subdivisions, and move up 4 units on the diagonal to reach the 374 m mark.

A pentagonal prism of 30 mm base side and height 50 mm is standing on the HP on its base, with one side of base perpendicular to VP. This prism is cut by a section plane 40° inclined to HP through mid-point of the axis. Draw the front view, sectional top view, and sectional side view. Draw also the true shape of the section.

4

A cube of side 30 mm rests on its base in the HP with a vertical face inclined at 30° to the VP. It is cut by a plane perpendicular to the VP and inclined at 50° to the HP, and the top portion of cube is removed. The plane bisects the axis of the cube. Draw the development of the frustum of the cube.

A rectangular prism 40 x 30 x 15 mm rests on the ground on one of its ends with one of the longest edges touching the PP and one of the shortest edges receding to the left at angle of 40° to the PP. The nearest vertical edge is 15 mm to the left of the station point which is at a distance of 55 mm in front of the PP and 30 mm above the ground. Draw the perspective view of the prism.
