Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions. Illustrate your answer with NEAT sketches wherever necessary

Part A

a

With the help of an example explain the Parallelogram law of forces.

2 marks

Answer

The Parallelogram Law of Forces states that if two forces acting at a point are represented in magnitude and direction by the two adjacent sides of a parallelogram, their resultant is represented by the diagonal of the parallelogram passing through that point. For example, if two tugboats pull a ship with forces P and Q at an angle θ, the resultant force R acting on the ship is the diagonal of the parallelogram formed by P and Q.

b

State and prove Lami’s theorem.

3 marks

Answer

Lami's Theorem states that if three coplanar forces acting at a point are in equilibrium, each force is proportional to the sine of the angle between the other two forces: P/sin(α) = Q/sin(β) = R/sin(γ). To prove this, represent the forces as a closed triangle (Triangle Law of Forces). By the Sine Rule in the triangle, the ratio of each side to the sine of its opposite angle is constant, which directly yields the theorem.
