Answer PaperPaper Code: 132AFMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

PART - A

125 marks
a

What is shear modulus?

2 marks

Answer

Shear modulus, or modulus of rigidity (G), is the ratio of shearing stress to shearing strain within the elastic limit of a material. It measures a material's resistance to shape deformation under shear force.

b

Derive an expression for work done in stretching a wire.

3 marks

Answer

When a wire of length L and cross-sectional area A is stretched by a force F, the work done dw for a small extension dl is dw = F dl. Since Young's modulus Y = (F/A) / (dl/L), we have F = (Y A l) / L. Integrating from 0 to extension x:

W = ∫ (Y A l / L) dl = (Y A / L) * (x2 / 2)

Substituting F = (Y A x) / L, the work done is W = (1/2) * F * x, which represents the elastic potential energy stored in the wire.
