Answer PaperPaper Code: 123BKMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

What is Specific gravity? What are its units?

2 marks

Answer

Specific gravity is defined as the ratio of the density of a fluid to the density of a standard fluid (water at 4°C for liquids). It is a dimensionless quantity and therefore has no units.

b

Calculate the specific weight, specific mass and specific gravity of a liquid having a volume of 6 m3 and weight of 44kN.

3 marks

Answer

Given: Volume (V) = 6 m3, Weight (W) = 44 kN = 44,000 N.

Specific weight (γ) = W / V = 44,000 / 6 = 7333.33 N/m3.

Specific mass (density, ρ) = γ / g = 7333.33 / 9.81 = 747.54 kg/m3.

Specific gravity (S) = ρ_liquid / ρ_water = 747.54 / 1000 = 0.7475.

c
