Main
Explain the nature and scope of Managerial Economics.
Answer
Managerial Economics is the application of economic theory and quantitative methods to business decision-making. Its nature is pragmatic, normative (prescriptive rather than just descriptive), and microeconomic in focus, aiming to bridge the gap between abstract economic theory and practical business problems.
The scope of Managerial Economics includes:
- Demand Analysis and Forecasting: Understanding consumer behavior and predicting future sales to plan production.
- Cost and Production Analysis: Determining optimal input combinations and cost structures to maximize efficiency.
- Pricing Decisions: Formulating strategies under different market structures like perfect competition, monopoly, or oligopoly.
- Profit Management: Analyzing profit policies, measurement, and break-even analysis.
- Capital Management: Evaluating investment decisions and allocating scarce capital resources effectively.
What is Demand? And explain the Law of Demand and its exceptions.
Answer
Demand refers to the quantity of a commodity that a consumer is willing and able to purchase at a given price during a specific period of time.
The Law of Demand states that, other things remaining constant (ceteris paribus), there is an inverse relationship between the price of a commodity and the quantity demanded. As price increases, quantity demanded decreases, and vice versa.
Exceptions to the Law of Demand include:
- Giffen Goods: Inferior goods where a price increase leads to an increase in quantity demanded due to a strong income effect.
- Veblen Goods (Conspicuous Consumption): Luxury items where high price confers status, causing demand to rise as price rises.
- Speculation: If consumers expect prices to rise further in the future, they may buy more even at current higher prices.
- Ignorance: Consumers may perceive a higher-priced product as being of higher quality and purchase more.
